Unity Theatre announces Liverpool/Kiwi collaboration
Liverpool’s Unity Theatre is embarking on an international collaboration with a New Zealand youth theatre.
Rising | Pike Ake – which is supported by the British Council – will see young creators in the city and 11,500 miles away in Hawke’s Bay on the east coast of New Zealand’s North Island work concurrently on the project, creating a single piece.
The project, delivered through eight weekly sessions, will be led by led by Unity’s artistic director Eli Randle and Liverpool writer Ginni Manning and both groups of young people will build a responsive piece, ‘exploring their experience with the climate crisis’.
The initiative is supported by the British Council through its Connections Through Culture grant programme.
Natasha Beckman, Director British Council New Zealand and the Pacific, says: "Cross-cultural exchanges such as Rising | Piki Ake demonstrate how artistic collaboration can transform individual creative practices and spark new possibilities.
“The range of projects we're supporting highlights the extraordinary innovation that emerges when artists from different cultural backgrounds come together, strengthening the fabric of our global creative community."
The Unity is now looking for Liverpool young people to take part in the project, but anyone aged 14 to 18 who is interested only has until February 3 to apply.
