Matilda the Musical comes to Liverpool Empire for Christmas 2025

Multi-award-winning smash hit musical Matilda is coming to the Liverpool Empire for Christmas 2025.

The Royal Shakespeare Company production will be at the Lime Street landmark from December 2 to January 4, 2026 as part of a tour of UK and Ireland and as the culmination of the Empire’s own centenary celebrations.

Based on Roald Dahl’s inimitable young heroine, the musical has a book by Dennis Kelly and lyrics and music by Tim Minchin, and is directed here by Matthew Warchus.

Since it was premiered 15 years ago, Matilda the Musical has won a staggering 100 plus awards worldwide, including 24 for Best Musical, and has delighted more than 12 million people across the globe.

Next year will be the first time it has come to Liverpool.

Matilda is the story of an extraordinary little girl who, armed with a vivid imagination and a sharp mind, dares to take a stand and change her own destiny.

Tim Minchin says: "When we first started working on the show, our aim was to make a lovely little jewel of a musical for the RSC’s Courtyard Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon.

“We never imagined that all these years later it would still be running in the West End, have been made into a film, and is now about to embark on its second tour of the UK and Ireland.

"I’m deeply proud of Matilda the Musical and every single talented person who continues to work on it with passion and enthusiasm."

And executive producers Denise Wood and Griselda Yorke add: “Christmas in Liverpool, what an absolute treat.

"We’re very pleased that the show will have five weeks in this glorious city. We’re proud of our show and for us to be able to tour it and visit cities like Liverpool so that audiences can share this extraordinary little girl’s story is very special indeed."
