Liverpool Empire 100 exhibition at Central Library

An exhibition marking the centenary of the Liverpool Empire is on display at the city’s Central Library.

The Liverpool Empire Theatre 100 display features photographs and artefacts – including programmes, tickets, letters, visitor books, flyers and architect plans – which tell the story of the Grade II listed Lime Street landmark.

It is due to run on the third floor of the William Brown Street library until April 26.

The exhibition is a collaboration between the theatre and the Liverpool Record Office and Archives - and was researched and written by myself.

Liverpool Empire manager Jeannie Clinton says: "It's been fantastic to work with Liverpool Record Office and Catherine Jones to create this exhibition.

"Highlighting the major part the theatre has played in the Liverpool City Region and beyond, entertaining the people of Liverpool over the past 100 years, is so rewarding.

“While we plan for the future as always, it was so interesting to have this opportunity to look back and learn more about the theatre's history. We’re sure it will evoke memories for all who visit the exhibition over the coming months."

Three display cases – titled Backstage, On Stage and Front of House – explore the history of theatre on the site, from 1866 when the Prince of Wales Theatre and Opera House opened its doors to the current day.

Backstage features architect plans for the old and current theatres, historic photographs showing the Empire being constructed in 1924 and more recent redevelopment.

On Stage includes content celebrating some of the huge range of performers and shows to grace the Empire’s stage over the past century, while Front of House tells personal stories of staff and theatregoers and includes visitor books owned by Liverpool theatrical landlady Avis Brooksbank.

The exhibition also includes three triangular pillars which tell the Empire’s story through a series of nine themes including Theatrical Stars, Big Gigs, Top Comedians, International Stars, Homegrown Hits and Royal Visits.

The Liverpool Empire Theatre 100 Exhibition is at Liverpool Central Library until April 26 and is free.
