Hope Street premiere for Cynthia Lennon musical
A new musical version of a hit show about Cynthia Lennon comes to the Liverpool stage next month.
This Girl – The Cynthia Lennon Story, written and directed by Mike Howl, will be premiered at the Hope Street Theatre from November 8-14.
It enjoyed a sell-out run at the venue in 2019 in its previous incarnation as a straight play.
The musical features eight new original songs and musical arrangements by Frankie Connor (The Hideaways), The Merseybeats’ Billy Kinsley and Alan Crowley (The Tuxedos) who together in 1989 founded Liverpool’s indie label Holly Records.
Teenagers Cynthia Powell and John Lennon met when they were both students at Liverpool Art College.
The shy girl from Hoylake and the guitar-wielding boy from Woolton fell in love and in 1962 married at Mount Pleasant register office. Brian Epstein was best man.
This Girl tells ‘Cyn’s’ story before, during and after Beatlemania – a story of “good and bad times, laughter and sadness.”
The title role is shared by Jess Turton (young Cynthia) and Mikyla Jane Durkan (older Cynthia), while Mark Reader is John Lennon, Samantha Richardson is Aunt Mimi and Brian Epstein is played by Kevin Thomas.
This Girl – The Cynthia Lennon Story is at the Hope Street Theatre from November 8-14. Tickets HERE
