Liverpool Playhouse stages A Christmas Carol to spread festive cheer

Liverpool Playhouse is set to stage A Christmas Carol this December - joining other venues promising some festive cheer in a Covid-hit year.

Outgoing artistic director Gemma Bodinetz will direct the Patrick Barlow’s version of Dickens’ classic Christmas story which will be at the theatre from December 4-24.

Tickets go on sale on October 22.

Barlow’s adaptation is described as ‘witty and joyous’ and promises carols and songs along with the tale of Ebenezer Scrooge and visitations from the ghosts of Christmas past, present and future.

Everyman Rock ‘n’ Roll panto regular Adam Keast takes on the central role at the head of a small cast which will follow Covid-safe measures during rehearsals and performances.

Gemma Bodinetz said “I’m delighted my final show as director of the Everyman and Playhouse will be a festive treat for Liverpool families. Patrick Barlow’s version of Dickens’ A Christmas Carol has the same fun and invention (and small cast size) that he brought to The 39 Steps but also retains the tenderness at its centre.

"Perhaps this Christmas more than any other, it will be poignant to remember the importance of human connection and goodwill to all mankind.

“Adam Keast was in my opening production of Twelfth Night in the new Everyman and has delighted our Christmas audiences every year in our acclaimed Rock ‘n’ Roll panto… I can’t wait to see his Scrooge.

“The Playhouse auditorium may be socially distanced, but we hope to beat away lockdown humbug with some theatrical magic and the joy of the live, shared experience.”

Audience members will receive regular updates on Covid-safe measures and tickets will come with a refund up to 11am on the day of performance (for people who are unable to attend due to illness). If any performance is cancelled ticketholders will receive their money back.

A Christmas Carol is at the Liverpool Playhouse from December 4-24.
