Western Approaches to house new Wrens museum

Liverpool’s Western Approaches is to become home to a new museum celebrating the history of the Wrens.

The National Museum of the Women’s Royal Naval Service will be created in the former sleeping quarters at the Second World War bunker – the top-secret nerve-centre of the Battle of the Atlantic.

The new attraction is expected to open in early 2021.

Western Approaches has teamed up with the Association of Wrens to tell the story of the service from 1917, when it was founded, to the 1990s, with exhibits coming from the Association’s own archives.

A statement by the Rumford Place attraction said: “We will be telling stories of life as a Wren both in and out of uniform, from signing up to nights out on the town and, of course, stories of the Wrens of Western Approaches.”

Wrens worked round the clock in the Operations Room, deep below Derby House in Exchange Flags, where they helped plot the progress of convoys and pinpoint the location of enemy submarines.

They were among 300 personnel to work in the underground headquarters.

The new museum will be included in the entry ticket for Western Approaches, but all women who served in the Wrens or currently serve in the Royal Navy will receive free entry.

Western Approaches is currently closed due to the coronavirus restrictions.
