Storyhouse to host 1930s movie musical weekend

Never mind the Roaring 20s, Storyhouse is stepping back to the first golden age of the musical this month.

The Chester cultural venue has joined forces with the British Film Institute (BFI) and is staging a weekend of movie musicals from the 1930s in its Art Deco home.

The mini festival - titled Let's Face the Music - kicks off on January 17 when A Damsel in Distress is screened in The Kitchen. The Oscar-winning musical comedy stars Fred Astaire and Joan Fontaine, and the £12 ticket price includes a complimentary cocktail and a live dance performance.

On January 18 the panoramic Garret Bar will be transformed in to a 1930s Sky Bar for a screening of Broadway Melody of 1936. Cocktails will be served, and filmgoers are invited to don 30s dress.

Meanwhile a double bill on the afternoon of Sunday, January 19 kicks off with 42nd Street at 1pm and continues at 2.45pm with The Gang’s All Here. Expect sweet treats from Sweet Elements along with some surprises.

Storyhouse artistic director Alex Clifton says: “We're so excited to create this unique cinema weekend as part of the national programme of film from the BFI – it will be a chance for audiences to experience the magic of cinemas it was back when Storyhouse was originally built in 1936.”
