Hop on the Sol Calero bus at Tate Liverpool
It’s all aboard at Tate Liverpool this summer for an artistic adventure with a difference.
While the Royal Albert Dock gallery is showcasing the first major UK exhibition of Keith Haring on its fourth floor, in the ground floor Wolfson Gallery visitors can go on a very different journey.
Sol Calero’s immersive installation El Autobús – the Venezuelan-born, Berlin-based artist’s first museum display in the UK – explores themes of cultural stereotypes and the tourism industry.
Visitors can climb on board a tourist bus for a journey through the inviting, brightly-coloured Latin American countryside, depicted by a 360 degree panorama painting on site by Calero.
But cocooned in the comfortable confines of the coach, how much of the reality of life for people who live in that country do you as a tourist really experience or understand?
Calero’s work invites its audience to immerse itself in an audio-visual experience taking people on a tour which blurs fantasy and reality, complete with a fictional but – for anyone who has taken such a trip, authentic – audio guide.
El Autobús is at Tate Liverpool until November 10 and is free.
