From Beatle to Bottom at the Epstein Theatre

Rude mechanicals and shrewd and knavish sprites are making the Epstein Theatre their home this month.

Last year was a bonanza for fans of the Bard, with a series of events staged to mark the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare's death.

And while it's not quite as busy as we head further in to 2017, there are still a number of productions in the pipeline.

The Everyman will complete its new repertory season with a quirky version of star'crossed lovers' favourite Romeo and Juliet in June.

But ahead of that, another audience favourite - A Midsummer Night's Dream, is coming to the Epstein courtesy of Daniel Taylor Productions and in a new adaptation by Helen Jeffery.

Taylor, whom Liverpool audiences will recognise from his recurring role as Sammy in Blood Brothers, last appeared on stage at the Hanover Street venue in 2016, playing John Lennon in Through a Glass Onion.

Now he returns not as a Beatle, but as an ass - starring as hapless artisan performer Nick Bottom, as well as directing the production.

He explains: "We've created an immersive and interactive production, with the action taking place throughout the theatre.

"This play will appeal to people of all ages, and is full of magic, merriment and mischief."

Sam Donovan plays Lysander, while Taylor's Blood Brothers co-star Sharon Byatt is Titania, and James Templeton will be throwing a girdle around the Earth as Puck.

A Midsummer Night's Dream is the theatre's first foray in to Shakespeare since it reopened as the Epstein - named in tribute to the Beatles' late manager - in May 2012.

Theatre manager Rebekah Pichilingi adds: "I’m sure Danny and his all-Scouse cast - well 90%, will do Shakespeare proud with his version of this hilarious love story."
