Sheridan Smith to play Cilla at Liverpool Empire

Cilla the Musical is returning to the Liverpool Empire where it all began – and Sheridan Smith is set to star as the Scottie Road songbird.

The Bill Kenwright Ltd show will open at the Lime Street theatre on September 21 at the start of a four-week residency.

It will then go on to tour the UK including Aylesbury, Edinburgh, Birmingham and Leeds.

Six years ago, Smith played Cilla on the small screen in a three-part mini-series filmed in Liverpool and penned by Jeff Pope, who also wrote the stage musical.

Cilla the Musical premiered at the Empire in September 2017 when Kara Lily Hayworth beat hundreds of would-be Cillas through open auditions for the role.

The show tells the story of the rise of the young Liverpudlian songstress from Cavern cloakroom girl to superstar singer.
